Saudi Arabia’s Media Regulation Authority has announced the suspension of 49 Saudi citizens who create content on social media, accusing them of “threatening the system”.

The 49 individuals are facing charges after speaking openly on their personal accounts about the worsening unemployment crisis in the country and calling for an end to the suffering of jobless citizens.

Their comments, which appeared to reflect the everyday concerns of ordinary people, were treated by the authorities as a political threat rather than a legitimate social demand.

The accusations brought against the content creators include:

Threatening public order — meaning the ruling system.

Threatening national security — meaning the security of Mohammed bin Salman.

Threatening the public interest — meaning the image and reputation of Mohammed bin Salman.

The case highlights the Saudi regime’s increasing intolerance of even peaceful criticism, particularly when it exposes social and economic failures under Mohammed bin Salman’s rule.
