Saudi Arabia staged a lavish cultural event last Friday at the Temple of Venus and Rome inside the Colosseum Archaeological Park in the Italian capital, as part of its internationally promoted “Marvels of Saudi Orchestra” tour.

The Saudi-sponsored concert featured Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, who has repeatedly performed for President Donald Trump and is widely associated with elite conservative political circles in the United States.

The event brought together the Saudi National Orchestra and Choir, dozens of Saudi musicians and traditional performers, alongside Italian orchestral participants, in a spectacle heavily promoted by Riyadh as a symbol of “cultural dialogue” between Saudi Arabia and Italy.

Critics, however, may view the Rome concert less as a cultural exchange and more as an expensive international public relations exercise aimed at rebranding Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman through elite Western cultural institutions.

Bocelli’s participation is also likely to fuel criticism that Saudi Arabia is using internationally recognised opera figures with close ties to Trump in an attempt to buy prestige and soften its image among European and American cultural audiences.

Saudi officials described the concert as part of a global campaign to showcase the Kingdom’s musical heritage, but detractors may see it instead as another stage in Riyadh’s broader effort to use art, entertainment and celebrity partnerships to rehabilitate its international reputation following years of controversy surrounding human rights and political repression.
