Initially, the party responsible for employing Ronaldo denied that he had left the country at all, after several Western media outlets reported that he had travelled abroad amid security tensions linked to the launch of American fighter jets from Saudi territory to strike Iran. However, once his departure was confirmed through images tracking the route of his private jet, the travel was acknowledged and a new explanation was presented, stating that he had left in order to receive treatment for a knee injury.

Later reports indicated that the player had been dealing with a muscle injury sustained during a league match and was expected to undergo rehabilitation and treatment abroad, with Spain mentioned as a possible destination for specialised recovery.

Whatever the true reason behind the episode, Saudi Arabia finds itself in an extremely awkward position.
