Ethiopia evacuates 2,436 of its citizens from Saudi Arabia after they were subjected to modern slavery

The Ethiopian government said that it had evacuated 2,463 of its citizens from Saudi Arabia in recent days for various reasons, foremost among them their exposure to modern slavery.

The Ethiopian government intervenes when its citizens working in Saudi Arabia are subjected to varying degrees of abuse, with modern slavery at the most severe end. These abuses include, but are not limited to:

▪️ Non-payment of wages.
▪️ Deception regarding employment contracts.
▪️ Various forms of abuse against domestic workers.
▪️ Being denied end-of-service entitlements, including return tickets.

The Ethiopian government said it had successfully evacuated around 99,000 Ethiopians from Saudi Arabia from September 2025 to the end of August 2026 and had enrolled them in treatment and preventive care programmes.
