The Nepalese government formally called on the Saudi ambassador on Friday morning to shut down a fee collection centre targeting Nepalese citizens seeking employment in Saudi Arabia. The centre was the scene of protests on 17 June, which resulted in the suspension of its operations.
The Saudi embassy had established the centre in the capital, Kathmandu, claiming that it was intended to assess the skills of Nepalese applicants in return for a fee of $100, and that those who passed the assessment would become eligible for employment opportunities in Saudi Arabia. The initiative was widely criticised as misleading and deceptive, lacking a clear and transparent migration framework.
